This is a Victrola. Made by Victor corporation since about 1906. Victor would later be bought out by RCA (Radio Corporation of America). RCA used the “His masters voice” logo of the dog with the Victrola for many decades after. A Victrola is like a record player (or vinyl player) except it is older and the records are heavier and made of shellac instead of PVC plastic. There is a much larger needle in use on a Victrola because the record needs to exert more force on the needle, and thus a diaphragm above it. A record player uses an electromagnetic pickup, so all it needs to do is wave a needle in front of a coil. The entire arm on the Victrola is a hollow tube to transmit the sound from the diaphragm and amplify it. The sound cone continues under the surface and loops out underneath.

The top of this picture is the end of the sound cone. It is like the older style with a big cone above the set, except this one is curled around underneath. By opening and closing the doors, you can sort of change the volume. The slats with letters are like an IKEA shelving unit. It is cloth bins where you can store your record collection.
